Toyota Kirloskar Motor has announced that its cumulative hybrid vehicle sales in India have crossed the 300,000-unit milestone, driven by the growing demand for Self-Charging Hybrid Electric Vehicles (SHEVs) in the domestic market. The company stated that rising consumer preference for better fuel efficiency, lower emissions, and hassle-free ownership has significantly boosted the adoption of hybrid technology in the country.
Toyota currently offers a range of hybrid models in India, including the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Toyota Innova HyCross, Toyota Camry Hybrid, and Toyota Vellfire. According to the company, its hybrid technology combines a petrol engine with an electric motor, enabling the vehicle to operate in electric mode for a substantial part of urban driving conditions. The battery is charged through regenerative braking and engine power, eliminating the need for external charging infrastructure.
Commenting on the achievement, Sabari Manohar, Executive Vice President – Sales, Service and Used Car Business at Toyota Kirloskar Motor, said that hybrid technology continues to play a key role in the company’s broader electrification strategy in India. Toyota also highlighted that it provides an 8-year warranty on hybrid batteries under its hybrid vehicle programme in the country.
Globally, Toyota stated that it has sold more than 38 million electrified vehicles across multiple technologies, including hybrids, plug-in hybrids, battery electric vehicles, and fuel-cell electric vehicles.
