US electric vehicle maker Tesla is preparing to unveil its second-generation Roadster electric sports car on October 1. The company posted a graphic featuring ‘10.01’ along with the message ‘Go for launch’ on its official X account, which is being seen as an indication of the upcoming Roadster’s reveal date. However, Tesla has not yet confirmed the car’s final specifications, pricing or delivery timeline.
Tesla first introduced the second-generation Roadster in November 2017. At the time, the company claimed that the car could accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in less than two seconds, with a top speed of more than 250 miles per hour and a driving range of over 600 miles. However, the vehicle’s development and production have faced several delays since then.
The new Roadster has also been linked to SpaceX-inspired cold-gas thruster technology. The graphic shared in Tesla’s latest post is being associated with the proposed system, which was previously discussed as an optional feature for the electric sports car. Tesla has not clarified whether the technology will be included in the production model or how it could affect the vehicle’s performance.
Pricing and production details for the new Roadster also remain unclear. Tesla had announced an initial price of $200,000 for the Roadster in 2017, while the Founder's Edition was priced at $250,000. These were earlier announced figures and may not reflect the pricing of the new model. Elon Musk has previously indicated that production could begin 12 to 18 months after the vehicle’s unveiling.
The October 1 reveal could provide answers to several questions surrounding the next-generation Roadster, which has been in development for nearly nine years. Tesla is expected to share more details about the car’s design, performance, technology and production plans, including whether the proposed SpaceX-linked thruster technology will feature in the final vehicle.
