Oil India Limited has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with CSIR-Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology (CSIR-IMMT) to undertake joint research and development (R&D) projects in the critical minerals sector. The agreement aims to facilitate collaborative R&D initiatives in line with the priorities outlined under India’s National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM).
The partnership will focus on enhancing technical capabilities and supporting India’s broader efforts to secure access to strategic mineral resources. CSIR-IMMT has been designated as a Centre of Excellence for critical minerals under NCMM, and the collaboration aligns with the mission’s goal of strengthening domestic capabilities in exploration, processing, and utilization of critical minerals.
The MoU was signed by the Director (Exploration & Development) of Oil India and the Director of CSIR-IMMT. The ceremony was attended by Oil India’s Chairman and Managing Director (CMD), functional directors, senior company officials, and scientists from CSIR-IMMT.
The National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM) is a government initiative aimed at enhancing India’s access to critical minerals essential for sectors such as clean energy, electronics, defense, and electric mobility. The mission focuses on improving domestic exploration, mining, processing, and recycling capabilities while reducing import dependence. It also promotes research and development, international partnerships, and private sector participation across the value chain.
By identifying and prioritizing key minerals such as lithium, cobalt, and rare earth elements, NCMM seeks to build a resilient supply ecosystem and support India’s long-term industrial growth, energy transition, and strategic security objectives.
