India leading energy storage industry body, the India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA), has urged BRICS nations to strengthen energy cooperation and critical mineral supply security. IESA submitted unified recommendations to the Government of India, calling for greater collaboration on advanced energy storage technologies, resilient local supply chains and timely access to critical minerals.
The recommendations were presented during a virtual event organised by the Ministry of Power (MoP), where IESA was responsible for technical coordination. Officials and representatives from Brazil, Russia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) participated in the event.
According to IESA, India’s clean industrial investment pipeline has reached around US$433 billion, covering 65 projects across four sectors and 11 states. The pipeline has grown by around 30% over the past six months, driven by investments in green hydrogen, renewable-energy-based manufacturing and low-carbon industries.
Debmalya Sen, President, IESA, said energy storage is becoming essential for grid flexibility and resilience as renewable energy integration increases. He noted that no single technology can meet all energy system requirements, making greater BRICS cooperation across value chains, manufacturing and innovation important.
India energy storage project pipeline has crossed 100 GW, with around 10 GW of capacity already commissioned. Green ammonia accounts for the largest share of new projects, while sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), green methanol and low-carbon aluminium are also gaining momentum.
Despite this growth, the energy storage industry remains significantly dependent on imports for critical minerals and key components. IESA has therefore called for stronger domestic manufacturing and integrated supply chains. It has also recommended expanding PLI support for recycling and advanced battery chemistries, along with dedicated incentives for stationary energy storage.
José Jesus Lima Neto, Infrastructure Analyst, Ministry of Mines and Energy, Brazil, highlighted the growing mineral requirements of clean-energy technologies. He said secure upstream mineral supplies and midstream processing are essential for expanding battery manufacturing, where BRICS nations collectively have significant resource advantages.
Shuvendu Kumar Bose, Energy Expert, Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, UAE, said that transmission economics is becoming an important challenge alongside renewable energy variability. According to him, co-locating storage with renewable projects can improve dispatchability and help reduce overall system costs.
Yuri Vlasov, Founder and CEO, Watts Battery, Russia, emphasised the role of building-level energy storage in improving local grid reliability. He said harmonised standards and joint pilot projects could help accelerate the deployment of distributed energy storage.
IESA has also recommended mutual recognition of test reports, harmonised measurement protocols and coordinated pilot projects among BRICS nations. These measures are expected to support the development of distributed storage, long-duration energy storage and next-generation storage technologies.
With IESA providing technical leadership and participation from BRICS energy experts, the initiative aims to strengthen knowledge sharing, joint demonstration projects and harmonised standards, supporting the development of a resilient, flexible and sustainable energy ecosystem.
