Japanese two-wheeler manufacturer Honda has patented its new electric scooter, the UC3, in India. The patent filing indicates the company's efforts to expand its global electric two-wheeler portfolio, although Honda has not yet officially announced plans to launch the UC3 in the Indian market. The cruiser-style electric scooter is already available in markets such as Thailand and Vietnam.
The Honda UC3 is larger than the company's recently unveiled QC3 electric scooter. It comes equipped with a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, which differs from the NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) battery technology used in Honda's existing electric scooters, the QC1 and Activa e, in India. According to Honda, the UC3 offers a claimed maximum range of 122km on a single charge.
In terms of performance, the UC3 is powered by an electric motor producing a peak output of 6kW. It has a claimed top speed of 120kmph, making it more powerful than Honda's current electric scooters in India. The scooter comes with three riding modes — Standard, Sport and Econ — along with a reverse mode.
For charging, the UC3 comes with a 450W standard charger, which takes around five hours to charge the battery from 20 to 80 percent. With the faster 1,200W charger, the same charging window can be completed in around two hours.
In terms of design, the Honda UC3 gets a cruiser-inspired styling. It has a kerb weight of 129kg and a seat height of 779mm. The scooter rides on 12-inch wheels at both ends and offers 26 litres of underseat storage, adding to its practicality for everyday use.
The UC3 also features a 5-inch TFT instrument cluster through which riders can configure riding modes and other settings. With its LFP battery, higher top speed and larger dimensions, the scooter could occupy a different position from Honda's existing electric models if introduced in India.
However, Honda has not confirmed any launch plans for the UC3 in India. Filing a patent primarily protects the company's intellectual property and product design in the country and does not necessarily indicate an imminent launch. Honda has already unveiled the QC3 electric scooter for the Indian market. The decision to introduce the UC3 will depend on market demand, product positioning and the company's broader electric vehicle strategy.
