Bengaluru-based EV technology company Exponent Energy has successfully retrofitted 200 internal combustion engine (ICE) autorickshaws into electric vehicles in Bengaluru through its Exponent OTO platform. The initiative was carried out as part of a four-month pilot project.
According to the company, the retrofitted electric autorickshaws have covered more than 1.5 million kilometres and completed over 25,000 charging sessions so far. Exponent Energy said that following the pilot, it has achieved around 20% market share in Bengaluru’s electric three-wheeler segment.
Based on the experience gained from the pilot project, Exponent Energy plans to expand its commercial retrofitment services to other major cities across India. The company is focusing on providing an alternative pathway to EV adoption by converting existing ICE vehicles into electric vehicles.
Ayush Bhargava, Head of Business, Exponent Energy, said the 200 retrofits in Bengaluru demonstrate the significant potential to electrify vehicles that are already on the road. Instead of waiting for existing vehicles to be replaced, retrofitment can help electrify the existing fleet.
He added that the retrofit model offers drivers a more accessible way to adopt EVs while allowing them to continue using their existing vehicles and the service ecosystem they are already familiar with.
